People looking to transfer their credit card balance to internet bank Egg have been told they will have to pay a 2% charge for the privilege. Egg joins banks such as Barclays, Alliance & Leicester and MBNA in imposing balance transfer charges.

The move will hit so-called rate tarts, people who move credit card debt between providers to benefit from 0% or low introductory interest rates. Analysts recently calculated that rate tarts cost lenders £1bn a year. Egg helped create the 0% introductory rate monster. Egg have imposed an upper limit of £50 for a balance transfer, and many other cards also have imposed the same kind of structure. It's quite likely other credit cards will also start to charge a balance transfer fee or scrap 0% interest balance transfers.
